If you have cool-toned blonde hair, chances are your stylist sent you home with silver shine to help neutralize brass. While purple shampoo can do wonders for keeping cool tones in hair, it is possible to have too much of a good thing.  

So, what do you do when you’ve used too much purple shampoo? 

Why hair turns purple 

First off, let’s talk about why your hair may be turning purple after using a pigmented shampoo.  

Here are a few reasons why this could be happening: 

• There’s no yellow or brassiness present on the hair 
• Using the silver shine too often 
• Leaving it on the hair too long 
• Using the wrong Silver Shine strength  
   

If you don’t have any underlying brassiness in your hair, there is nothing for the purple pigment to counteract—which will leave your hair looking purple. Tinted shampoo is not preventative, so feel free to use it when you see yellow tones start to appear in your hair (typically 1-2 weeks after your color service) 

If you are using silver shine daily, chances are you’ve got a purple tinge to your hair. Pigmented shampoos are not designed to be used frequently, so step one is to cut back on usage.  

Another common issue is leaving silver shine on your hair for a long time. The longer the shampoo/ conditioner stays on your hair, the more pigment is deposited. If you notice a purple cast to your hair after using silver shine, try rinsing it out a little sooner.  

Did you know that there is a “light” version of silver shine? silver shine light has 50% less pigment than our original formula. This makes it harder to overuse, and a great option for those of us who may be a little nervous about using a pigmented shampoo.  

How to fix “purple shampoo hair” 

The good news is silver shine pigments are temporary it last one or two washes. If you don’t want to wait that long, there are a few steps that you can take to remove the purple pigment from your hair.  

Shampoo with either milk_shake deep cleansing shampoo or another non-pigmented shampoo right when you notice too much purple tone in your hair. Let the shampoo sit on your hair for 3-5 mins, repeat if necessary. Follow -up the shampoo with a non-pigmented conditioner or hair treatment.  

Many things can impact your hair’s overall health, wellbeing, and appearance. One of the biggest culprits may even be lurking in your shower. The water you use to cleanse your hair may be doing more harm than good. 

Hard water contains minerals and trace metals that can do serious damage to your hair, as they build up over time. Let’s review some tell-tale signs of hard water and talk about what you can do to mitigate the effects on your hair.  

How to tell if you have hard water 

First off, let’s talk about what makes water hard vs. soft. Hard water contains trace amounts of minerals like calcium, and/or metals such as copper, lead, and iron. Both can build up on surfaces, causing discoloration.  
Softened water is typically run through a salt-based filtration system to help remove these elements. You will notice with soft water that your soaps make a richer lather and can take a little longer to rinse. 

There are a couple of easy ways to determine whether your water is considered “hard”. First, look at your sink and tub or shower drains. If you notice a ring of discoloration, it’s likely that there are elements in your water causing it.  

You may also notice a film or build up on your shower head or around your bath tub. This is a sign of excessive calcium build up, which can actualyl cause plumbing issues.  

If you notice that your hair is looking dull and your hair color less vibrant, your water could be part of the problem.  

While these are all signs that you could have hard water, the best way to be sure is to have your water tested.  

*FUN FACT: if you have a local pet shop with a fish department, they may offer free water testing. Otherwise, ask at your local hardware store. They often stock mail-in kits.  

How to get rid of hard water build up on your hair 

There are a few solutions for treating and preventing hard water build up on your hair. The first (& easiest!) is to use a detoxifying shampoo 1-2x per week like milk_shake Deep Detox shampoo. You can also install a water softener, or filter on your shower head, to prevent hard water from reaching your hair in the first place.

It’s no secret that our skin tone and hair color are inextricably linked. The under tones of our skin are often mirrored in our natural hair color. For example, if you have warm tones in your skin, it’s likely that your hair will have yellow, orange or red undertones. The same rules apply for those of us with cool undertones and even neutral tones (yes, that is a thing). 

While this all sounds like more of “deep dive” into hair color theory than you may be needing, your undertones play a HUGE role in determining not only which shade will look best on you. It also helps your colorist to know which color after care will work best to keep your tones fresh. 

3 ways to find your undertones  

There are many different ways to determine whether or not you have warm, cool, or natural undertones. One of the easiest is to look at your eye color: 

• Brown, amber, or hazel eyes= warm undertones
• Blue, green, gray, or violet eyes = cool undertones

Keep in mind that this is a quick and easy method for determining your base undertone. If you want to get REALLY into it, you can start looking at different shapes and shades in the iris of your eye. This can help you find which specific color palette will look best on you, overall. 

A second. Simple way to find your base undertone is to hold a piece of blank white paper up to your face. You can also put on a pure white t-shirt, as long as it’s plain and pure white.  

• If your skin looks slightly blue-ish, and you like how it looks next to white, you likely have cool undertones.  
• If your skin looks more yellow and you don’t like how it looks next to white, you probably have warmer undertones.  

 Finally, you can take a look at your jewelry collection. If you have lots of gold and/or rose gold jewelry and love how it looks on you, you are pulling warm. If you prefer silver, white gold, or platinum, you have cooler undertones in your skin.  

How your hair color impacts your undertones 

The undertone of the hair color that you choose, will either highlight or downplay your skin undertones. If you have a ruddy complexion that you are looking to counterbalance, it is best to choose a hair color with cool undertones. This will visually neutralize the appearance of rosiness in your skin. 

The same effect can be applied if you want to “warm up” a naturally pale complexion. Choosing a new hair color with warm undertones can help to bring out rosiness in the skin. Want to highlight a naturally warm skin tone? You can bring out those gorgeous rosy, yellow, and orange skin tones with traditionally warm hair colors like copper, bronze and gold. 

Olive tones, while traditionally considered on the warm side, often have a green undertone. This can be neutralized with a warm hair color that will help to highlight the natural warmth in your skin tone.

Braided ponytail holder

Step 1: Divide your hair in half, starting at top of one ear and moving horizontally across the back to the other.  

Step 2: Clip the top portion out of the way. 

Step 3: Take a small section in the middle of your head and create a simple 3-strand braid.  

Step 4: Using a small elastic, pull the end of the braid through, to create a loop.  

Step 5: Pull the top section through the loop and pull the end of the braid to tighten. 

Double braided low-pony

Step 1: create 2 simple 3-strand braids—one on each side of your head.  

Step 2: Take one of the braids and about halfway down, pull one of th braided sections slightly apart to create a hole in the braid.  

Step 3: Take the other braid and pull it through the hole, tail first.  

Steo 4: The braids will now criss-cross the back of your head. Pull the tails and tuck them under the rest of your hair, secure them together with an elastic to create a small, braided pony underneath your hair.  

Step 5: If you had clipped your hair up and out of way, to create the small pony, release it for the final look.  

Double bubble braids

Step 1: Divide your hair in half, vertically and pull into two ponytails. 

Step 2: About 1/3 of the way down one ponytail, add an additional elastic to create a new section.  

Step 3: Separate the section you just created, forming a hole.  

Step 4: pull the end of the ponytail through the hole, this will create a twist on either side of the hole.  

Step 5: Repeat steps 2-4 two more times, traveling down the length of the pony, and leaving a long-ish tail.  

Step 6: Repeat on the other side.
